Societies evolve based on the critical mass of evolved individuals and organizations within that society.  Each segment of a larger society must be at the same stage or one higher than the norm for a society to be considered healthy.  The economic system must match the political system, must match the religious and legal systems to allow the society to behave in a logically consistent and emotionally satisfying way.

Feudal societies were healthy for their time because the religious system, the political system and the economic system all supported each other in an agricultural age that was exactly as it should be.  They were all at the exact same stage across the modalities.  It also happened that a critical mass of individuals were educated enough to live in a Feudal society.  The average education level was insufficient for any other type of society.

Capitalism, the stage the United States exists in today, is a healthy society because we live in a representative democracy, and because our religious systems support a representative system where there is an individual between you and the source of the religious connection.  As society evolves, as individuals within society become more intelligent, more educated, learn more about their place in the world, a disruptive state within the culture will occur where that distinction and that separation form the individual and the source of the power, or the source of the information will no longer suffice.  The individual craves closer connection with the source of the religion, the source of the politics, how the economy works.  They no longer accept a 3-tiered economy; they want a 2-tiered economy.  Not that they want a 2-tiered economy, but that the economy can support full gainful employment within that society.
